Day 70 – At Sea – July 30th, 2015

Charleston, USA to Curacao, NA

Today we returned to the tropics and the expected heat and humidity, but in addition, we are back to the almost continuous rocking and rolling resulting from the strong trade winds. Today we headed through the Bahamas, followed by the Windward Passage, before entering the Caribbean Sea enroute to Curacao. Yet another quiet sea day aboard Sea Princess, culminating with another poor dinner.

Day 68 – Charleston, USA – July 28th, 2015 (Horse Drawn Carriage Tour)

As soon as I saw they offer horse drawn carriage rides in Charleston, there was no need to review other options, as this would be top of Judi’s wish list. Billed as a carriage ride around historic downtown Charleston led by an informative guide, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Having just spent 2 days in New York City this was the perfect contrast, a quiet and laid back city, where the residents are renowned as being the friendliest in the United States.

Day 69 – At Sea – July 29th, 2015

Charleston, USA to Curacao, NA

After the cool temperatures experienced in the North Atlantic and Iceland, as we head south following the Florida Coastline we are returning to the heat and humidity experienced on the segments prior to Southampton. However, while it’s getting warmer, the weather hasn’t improved, with the morning starting with 25 kt winds, overcast skies and heavy rain shortly after breakfast. For our sea day routine, I attended an exceptional lecture on Apollo 11 and our entire dinner table returned to the Steakhouse for dinner.

Day 68 – Charleston, USA – July 28th, 2015

Charleston, USA – 07:00 to 17:00

Our first visit to South Carolina and today we have booked a tour on a horse drawn carriage, meandering around the streets of historic downtown Charleston, where most of the buildings date from the 1800’s. While the tour was rather brief, on completion I headed out on foot retracing the tour’s track plus a few additional miles. This permitted an opportunity to not only view the historic buildings, but actually read the historical information attached to many of the homes.

Day 67 – At Sea – July 27th, 2015

New York, USA to Charleston, USA

Since we didn’t receive the champagne breakfast we ordered in Southampton, for our anniversary, the Customer Service Manager made arrangements for it to be delivered this morning. Wow, read on to find out about the feast we received. Other than the breakfast, today was just another of the many sea days aboard the Sea Princess 2015 World Cruise.

Day 66 – New York, USA – July 26th, 2015

New York, USA – 00:00 to 17:00

Our 2nd almost full day in New York and our plans were for Judi to have a quiet day resting her back after yesterday, and I planned to visit the USS Intrepid Museum, an aircraft carrier berthed a couple of piers down from us. In addition to the carrier they have about 18 aircraft on deck, a space shuttle, concord and a submarine. Alas, the plans changed and I wasn’t able to leave the ship today. Wasn’t the greatest of starts to our final 40 day segment of the World Cruise.

Day 65 – New York, USA – July 25th, 2015 (Ground Zero)

After completing the HoHo Downtown Loop our priorities for the remainder of the day were – Ground Zero, Macy’s and a stroll along 8th Avenue towards Times Square. We spent a couple of hours at Ground Zero, visited Macys and walked along 8th Ave, stopping for dinner, but by then Judi’s back required a rest, so we headed to the shuttle, returning to the ship about 19:30.

Day 65 – New York, USA – July 25th, 2015 (Ho-Ho Bus Tour)

New York, USA – 24 hours

Since we arrived early in New York last evening, we have already completed the immigration formalities and everyone is free to head ashore at their convenience. We have signed up for the 1-day Hop On-Hop-Off bus through the ship, which includes a shuttle to/from the ship and bus stop for both uptown and downtown loops. You can’t possibly see all of New York in a single day, so decision time – sit on the bus for about 5 hours and complete both loops or complete one loop, get off and check out a couple of sights. Due to the number of photographs I will split the today’s tour into two posts.

Day 64 – Arrival New York – July 24th, 2015

Reykjavic, Iceland to New York, USA

Finally we make landfall in North America, not in Halifax as per the schedule, but New York or the Big Apple. Another relaxing sea day culminated in the three hour transit from the pilot station to our berth in Manhattan, followed by US Immigration, which was a five hour marathon. Although our meeting with immigration was barely a couple of minutes, only about 20 passengers are USA or Canada, so the remainder had to go through the finger prints and photograph routine, which take considerably longer.

Day 63 – At Sea–July 23rd, 2015 (Should Have Been Halifax, Canada)

Reykjavik, Iceland to New York, USA

Today we should have been enjoying the sights of Halifax, Nova Scotia, including our planned visit to the Maritime Museum for the Titanic Exhibition, followed by lunch at a downtown Irish Pub. However, the Captain changed the itinerary yesterday, cancelling Halifax and sailing directly to New York, hence we have another sea day. We were so looking forward to Halifax, having deliberately not visited the Maritime Museum during our visit last summer, as it was only a short walk from the cruise ship terminal.
