Day 20 – 24th January 2020, Alongside Suva, Fiji

03 First lines ashore in Suva

Today had a little of everything, being a combination of port day and sea day. We arrived in Suva, shortly before 07:00, departing the ship shortly thereafter and were on the bus before 07:30. After an action packed tour we returned to the ship seconds before the all aboard time, as the ship sailed for New Zealand at 14:00.

Day 19 – 23rd January 2020, Cruising South Pacific

Viking Sun Flag State Ensign

Another sea day routine, as we steamed at a very sedate 11 kts across the South Pacific between Tonga and Fiji. Today we had a lecture on ocean liners of the past and an excellent evening show, which was a tribute to Karen Carpenter.

Day 18 – 22nd January 2020, Tonga Tour

28 West coast blowholes 5

Today is the first of our private tours, which I researched extensively. The ship’s tours were all shorter and focussed on one specific area, but we wanted more of an overall tour around the entire island.

We booked a 6-hour tour of the island with “Toni’s Tour” and he definitely didn’t disappoint. OMG, in 8.5 hrs we almost saw the entire island. Yes, we started at 08:00 and he returned us to the ship at 16:30.

Read on for today’s tour report and photos.

Day 17 – 21st January 2020, Arr Nuku’alofa Tonga

Afternoon tea and scone

Afternoon Tea with Fruit Scone, jam and cream

Today the weather abated significantly, but we are still at the edge of a Cat 3 Tropical Revolving Storm (Cyclone), so the ship is still rolling & pitching somewhat. We arrived in Nuku’alofa Tonga just after Noon, for an overnight stay.

With only a couple of days to organise, the ship did an excellent job arranging a fleet of shuttle buses to a local resort and an onboard performance from a local troupe.

Read on for photos of the performance, walk around Nuku’alofa and afternoon tea.

Day 16 – 19th January 2020, Cruising South Pacific

03 Viking Sun at anchor

Today I have managed to get the little point & shoot camera working, so I will be including more daily pictures from around the ship. The full frame 5D is great for taking photos, but with a power drive and separate flash, it is just too heavy to carry everywhere around the ship.

Enjoy a few new photos.

Day 15 – 18th January 2020, Cruising South Pacific

03 Altered onto final approach with fresh beam wind

Judi wishes the seas were this smooth out here

Today we were scheduled to anchor off the Cook Islands, participating in the included excursion and an optional excursion. However, the deep depression currently passing through the area dictated we head directly to Tonga, so today is another relaxing sea day.
