Niagara Falls – Behind The Falls Tour

The Falls from the viewing platform 2With current location posted as Maple Ridge BC, you may ask why am I posting about a tour in Niagara Falls, a mere 3,000 miles and 3 time zones to the East. The answer, Jeeves ol’ chap is rather simple, as I complete another assignment for the Blogging 101 course.

Today’s assignment includes:

  • Honing the blog focus,
  • Publish a post for your dream reader, and
  • Incorporate a new element

We started this blog to record memories of our travels and as a medium for family and friends to follow us, as we enjoy the RV lifestyle travelling North America and circumnavigating the globe on a World Cruise. Therefore, today’s challenge is how to maintain the focus on travel, when we are actually at home for a few months, awaiting the impending arrival of our first grandson.

What new element should I include? To date, I haven’t got around to learning how to upload/embed videos to a post, so today’s objective is to post the inaugural video. I reviewed the pros/cons of uploading video directly to WordPress, or embedding from a 3rd party like Youtube. Everything I read recommends not uploading video to WordPress due to bandwidth issues, so I elected to use Youtube.

On reviewing the available video files I elected to go with files from our visit to Niagara Fall last summer. Read on to see how I accomplish these goals and provide a report on the Behind The Scenes Tour at Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls – Simply Spectacular

Finally the day had come that we planned to walk the Falls by day and night; while we enjoyed the previous drive past, we just couldn’t wait to stand by the river bank and actually feel the spray and be deafened by the thunderous roar. We had a beautiful warm and sunny day, but this presented a challenge, as we aren’t comfortable leaving the dogs in the car, even with windows open. Therefore, our plan called for a number of trips down to the Falls and back to the campground at least every four hours to let the dogs out.

Niagara Parkway Drive & Sightseeing

Our plan for today is to drive the Niagara Parkway, which follows along the entire river from Fort Erie north to the small town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. We were pleasantly surprised, as it is one of the rare water front roads that predominantly runs along the banks of the river affording spectacular views. Today’s agenda includes a tour of Fort Erie, drive along the river to the Falls, followed by stops at the whirlpool, Queenston Heights Park, Brock Monument, McFarlane House, Fort George and a walk around Niagara-on-the-Lake. A rather busy day of sightseeing; read on to find out if we achieved all our goals.

Laura Secord – Canadian Heroine or Chocolate Manufacturer?

Laura Secord homestead signToday’s agenda included a couple of quick tasks in Niagara followed by a drive to Queenston to check out a couple of Niagara Parks – The Laura Secord Homestead and MacKenzie Printery. To answer the title question, Laura Secord is both a Canadian Heroine and a Canadian manufacturer of fine chocolates, with the chocolate company being named after the heroine, and starting the business in 1913, commemorating the centenary of her accomplishment.

We’re On The Road Again – Finally

Thanks to the great people at Hitch n Go RV in Delhi, Ontario we are resuming our voyage towards Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Ocean. To resume our trip, in New Brunswick on schedule, requires 2 days of about 500 miles each day. Therefore, we will be a day late arriving in New Brunswick.

Unable to use the shower, kitchen sink or dishwasher it is time to head for repairs. The factory service centre didn’t have any available appointments, but fortunately Hitch n Go RV Inc in Delhi, Ontario could help us on Wednesday. Parked next to the service building, we are comfortably boondocking with 30 Amps and water hookups.

Niagara Falls Scouting Mission

As it is only a short hop from Cookstown down to Niagara Falls, we were set up by 14:00 and sitting down enjoying a quick cuppa, while we planned the rest of the day. Even Judi doesn’t recall being in this area before, so being a nice day we elected to take a drive to scout the area and plan our activities for the next 4 days.

The park’s internet has a good signal, but zero bandwidth, so we couldn’t get online to research the area or check out Google maps, therefore we set off, armed only with the free maps received at check-in and off course the trusty GPS. Our intended route is along the edge of Marineland, Canada’s equivalent to Sealand, then onto Niagara Parkway at the Welland River for the drive along the Niagara River and the Falls.

Ottawa and Quebec City – Cancelled

If you follow Judi on Facebook you will be well aware of the water issues we experienced this past week. Shortly after leaving the service centre we had a problem with the kitchen supply and drain pipes, as when the slides went out the pipes got jammed into a tangled mess, resulting in no water at the kitchen sink.  Our dealer in Abbotsford conveniently owns a dealership about 4 miles from our current location, and while they aren’t a Redwood dealer, Redwood approved they could work on the issue.

Our niece Kathryn invited us over for dinner at their house in Orangeville, so we decided to go play tourist in the surrounding area for the day. We had already researched the area, so on the agenda was – Island Lake Conservation Area, Hockley Brewery and Orangeville downtown carvings.
